Guidelines for School Registration

1. Introduction:

This policy is coming into effect under the guidance of the Board of Management and according to the law as laid out in the Education Act (1998) Section 15 (d)

2. School Statement:

This school follows the Primary School Curriculum as laid down by the Dept. of Education and Science and the school operates under the rules and guidelines of this Department. Programmes are amended regularly, especially at present, according to Sections 9 and 30 of the Education Act (1998) The rights of the Patron are portrayed in the Education Act 1998 in accordance with the Department of Education and Science.

Gaelscoil na Dúglaise supports the following basic principles:

Inclusion:

All children are welcome in this school and every effort will be

made to facilitate equally the needs of each child.

Equality:

Equality is emphasised in every aspect of the school day and participation in all school activities. The school community makes every effort to be positive and to co-operate with one another for the benefit of the whole community.

Choice:

The right of parents to enrol their child in their choice of school is respected.

Participation:

Attention and regard will be paid to different traditions, languages, religion, customs, culture etc.

Respect:

Respect is shown to each person who enrols in the school and no discrimination shall occur concerning ability, race, tradition, customs and language.

3. School Ethos

This is a co-educational Irish medium primary school. Teaching is through the medium of Irish and all daily communications are conducted through Irish.

This school is under the patronage of the Catholic Bishop of Cork and Ross. Recognition and respect are given to culture, tradition and race of every human person.

4. Daily organisation of School:

a) Opening Time:

The Board of Management is responsible for the children between 8.50a.m and 2.30p.m from Monday to Friday

Closing Time:

School closes officially each day at 2.30p.m. Infant classes go home at 1.30p.m.

c) Break Time:

Children have their break between 10.50a.m. and 11.00a.m. each morning.

d) Lunch:

Children eat their lunches in the classrooms between 12.30 p.m and 12.40 p.m. They go to the playground from 12.40pm to 1.00pm.

Enrolment Procedure in the School:

Any child who has reached the age of four years is welcome to enrol in the school, but the following criteria are taken into account when a class is being organised:

That the guidelines of the Dept. of Education and Science are being followed with regard to age, number of teachers, etc.

That the child is four years old –

That the child has attended the school Naíonra

That there is reasonable gender equity in the class.

That the child is raised through the medium of Irish.

That the child has attended another Gaelscoil in the state.

That the parent/guardian is willing to abide by the ethos and code of discipline of the school.

Registration Practice:

1. Applications are accepted for whom registration forms have been

completed, having been signed, dated and stamped with school stamp and are on file in the school.

2. That parents are made aware before end of January, where possible, that a place for their child/children is available.

Decision Making:

It is the Board of Management of the school who decides enrolment in this school according to this policy. When making this decision, the Board of Management endeavours to be fair and equitable, with the school ethos being a major factor.

Children will be welcome in this school according to the following sequence:

Brothers and sisters of children already attending the school

Brothers and sisters of past pupils

Children raised through the medium of Irish

Children who attend the Naíonra in the school

Inclusion of Parents:

The school strongly believes that the home, the school, the Board of Management, Parents’ Association and the school staff should work hand in hand. It is advised that the following would occur:

That there would be co-operation between teaching staff and parents for the child’s benefit and that of the school

That parents would be included in the management of the school, especially at Board of Management level

Needs of Children Attending This School:

While a child is attending this school, every effort will be made to provide a caring and comfortable environment necessary for his/her development physically, socially, emotionally, spiritually, educationally, cognitively and linguistically suitable to his/her ability.

Registration of Children With Special Needs:

The welfare and well being of all our pupils is a priority for the Board of Management. The following guidelines will be followed when a child with special needs enrols in this school:

The Board of Management in consultation and in co-operation with others (i.e. doctors, psychologists etc.) shall seek to provide the necessary facilities for the child and knowing his/her requirements will evaluate and monitor this situation.

The Board of Management will interact with other groups to devise a personal working plan for the child, if necessary.

Information must be provided and stored so that assistance may be sought for the child, the teacher, the class and the school community.

The Board of Management shall decide the most effective and suitable way to provide for the child’s needs, as soon as reports are available. The Principal or other representative of the school will meet with the child’s parents/psychologist etc., to discuss in detail the needs of the child. In order to benefit the class and the child, the Board of Management may delay the registration of the child in the school until such time as:

A written report is available from the psychologist etc.

That adequate resources are provided by the Department of Education and Science and any other organisation to fully cater for the entitled needs of the child

Children Transferring to Gaelscoil na Dúglaise from another school or children leaving the school:

It is the responsibility of the Board of Management to forward a record of attendance of the child to the transferring school according to the Education Act (1998). However, a progress report on the child may not be forwarded to anybody without the prior consent of parents/guardians.

Children may transfer to this school at any stage during the school year – referring to this policy and by prior permission of the Board of Management and the Department of Education and Science. Every effort will be made to accommodate a child transferring to this school from another Gaelscoil.

11. Placement of Child on Official School Roll

Children are accepted into this school on the first day the school opens after the Summer Holidays. If a family moves to the area during the school year, the Board of Management may give the child permission to commence in the school at that stage.

12. School Code of Conduct

The Board of Management of Gaelscoil na Dúglaise accepts this policy and this document will become effective in the school from January 2003.
